Panel Discussions: “New Directions in Curatorial Models”
Sean Kelly will host a panel discussion on Saturday, May 7th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm focusing on curatorial models in the 21st century. Panelists will debate the evolving definition of the role of the curator. Among the questions we will focus on are: What does it mean to be a curator today? What is the process when curating an exhibition? How has the role of the curator evolved? Who are the curators of tomorrow? Representing different curatorial perspectives on the panel will be: Isolde Breilmaier, an Independent Curator; Liz Christensen, a Corporate Curator; and Amy Goldrich, a Collector as Curator. The panel will be moderated by Sean Kelly.
This panel discussion will appropriately take place at the gallery within the context of the exhibition, Robert Mapplethorpe: 50 Americans (May 7 – June 18, 2011).

When a Witch Marries a Priest by Suzanne Bocanegra
When a Priest Marries a Witch is a story about a priest, an artist, and a young girl in Pasadena, TX, and is part artist’s talk, part performance, part cultural history and part sound installation. New York-based artist Suzanne Bocanegra talks about her work, channeled through Paul Lazar, an actor long-associated with New York’s legendary Wooster Group. Together (sort of) they tell a tale incorporating Elvis, abstract expressionism, the Pope, astronauts, the Singing Nun and, obviously, a witch. One hour in duration, first performed by Paul Lazar at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY on May 3, 2010.
Tickets are free but RSVP is recommended as seating is limited. The performance runs for one hour. Please RSVP to reception@jamescohan.com or 212-714-9500.

Paper Monument Gives You Homework
As a preview of their forthcoming pamphlet, the editors of Paper Monument will discuss the art of the art assignment. Topics will include: what makes a good or bad assignment? What’s the best or worst one you’ve ever heard of? Should art schools be more instructional or less? Audience participation will be encouraged. After the discussion, we’ll have a short teach-in: you can tell us your tales of art education and we’ll take notes; and if you’re in need of direction, we’ll assign you some homework.

New York Gallery Week Panel Discussion
The panel discussion is an outgrowth of New York Gallery Week’s mission to create a forum for all regional museums and institutions, both large and small, with the intent of helping the nation’s museums to network closely with one another as well as tighten relations with the vast array of contemporary art galleries in New York City. Creating a diverse panel, including directors and curators from leading university museums across the country, as well as an artist, the discussion will develop around both future visions for the museum structure and the impediments one encounters in running and working within an institution. Every level, from infrastructure to exhibitions will be on the table.
Panel Participants: Sabine Eckmann, director of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis; Claudia Gould, director of the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania;Jacob Proctor, curator at the University of Michigan Museum of Art; artist, Liam Gillick; moderated by Scott Rothkopf, curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art
