“Coming back to our topic that is New York, I think that the city is a gallery-driven city. I’m not saying a market-driven city but a gallery-driven city. There are galleries in Chelsea that probably don’t even profit or that don’t make enough money, however it’s true that we have 400 galleries in Chelsea and you probably have the equivalent of a couple of Documentas happening every month. I’ve always thought — and this is something we tried to do with Maurizio Cattelan and Ali Subotnik with the second issue of Charley — that what makes New York fascinating is that you could treat the whole city as an exhibition and every month you would have the most incredible exhibition, on a scale that no Documenta or Venice Biennial could compete with. This kind of energy has of course an impact on institutions.”
